         Vothu Shavige/Home Made Rice Noodles

Vothu Shavige/Home Made Rice Noodles is a traditional dish passed from our ajji to us.

Recipe Requested by Harshala Rajesh.

Rice: 1 cup 

Dosa Rice: 1 cup

Avalakki: A handful

Ingredients for seasonings/oggarane:

Oil: 2 tbsp

Urad dal: 1 tsp

Bengal gram: 1 tsp

Mustard seeds : 1 tsp

turmeric: 1 tsp 

Green chillies: 4-5 cut length wise

Capsicum : 1 chopped small sized

Peas : 100 gms

Coriander Leaves - a handful

Curry Leaves


Ingredients for Sweet:

Powdered Jaggery: 1 cup

Grated Dry Copra: 1/4 cup

White Til/Poppy Seeds: 1/4 cup

Elachi: 2

1. Soak rice, dosa rice and avalakki for 3 hours.

2. Grind all the above to very fine paste with little water.

3. Prepare idlis with the batter as shown in the picture.

4. Transfer the hot idlis to Vottu shavige orallu/Shavige Pressing machine and press to make shaviges as shown in the picture.

5. Prepare Noodles as above with the entire idlis. 

Preparation of Seasoning/Oggarane:

1. Place the oil in the griddle, add mustard seeds on spluttering add urad dal, bengal gram, chillies,capsicum, peas, turmeric, curry leaves and asafoetida. Fry them till the veggies are soft. Allow it to cool down.

2. Transfer the seasoning/oggarane to the shavige/noodles. Add salt, lemon juice and grated coconut. Mix well and serve.

Now Prepare sweet:

1. Roast white til/poppy seeds on low flame till it turns golden brown.

2. Grind jaggery , roasted poppy seeds (gasgase)/white til and copra to fine powder.

3. Mix this with plain shavige.

Now you can serve both Spicy(Khara) shavige and sweet shavige.
