         Methi Seeds Dal Sambar/Srimad bele huli/Menthya huli

Methi Seeds Dal Sambar/Srimad bele huli/Menthya huli is a very tradional sambar prepared by Madhwa Brahmins. Methi Seeds Dal Sambar includes only methi seeds and no veggies are required. Methi Seeds Dal Sambar is very tasty and makes a fabulous combination with rice and ghee.

Its being told Menthya Huli was most loved by SriMadhavacharya and hence it is also called Srimad bele huli.

Health Benefits of Methi Seeds:

Methi which is popularly known as Fenugreek can be easily included in your diet plan and most of its beneficial properties lie in its seeds. The fenugreek seeds consist of an amino acid which can start the production of insulin in the body which in turn can help you to lower the level of blood sugar.


Methi Seeds: 1/4 cup

Toor Dal: 1 cup

Tamarind juice: 2 tbsp

Sambar Powder: 2 and 1/2 tbsp

Grated Coconut: 1/2 cup


Turmeric: 1/2 tsp

Grated Jaggery: 1 tsp

Curry Leaves: 1 strand

Ghee: 1 tbsp

Red chillies: 2 - 3

Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp

Salt to taste


1. Pressure cook dal with lesser quantity of water.

2. Grind coconut, sambar powder to a fine paste.

3.  Heat ghee in the kadai on a medium flame. Add mustard seeds when it starts spluttering add red chillies and methi seeds, fry till methi seeds turns golden brown, which gives a good aroma. 

4. Add curry leaves, Asafoetida, cooked dal, turmeric, fine paste from step 2, Jaggery and salt to taste. Add very little water if required. But huli/sambar needs be thick. Simmer the flame and cook for 5 - 10 mins.

Serve hot with rice and menasinakai balaka.
