Amla/Indian gooseberry/Nellikayi is a sour and tangy fruit known for its
medicinal qualities. It is rich in Vitamin C , and known to prevent
premature hair-fall. Amla Rice is easy to prepare and is very tasty.
Amla/Nellikai Thokku is a traditional spicy side dish which is very much similar to pickle. Nellikai in Kannada is the Indian Gooseberry which is available in the market during the month of November (Kartika Masa).Amla Tokku is very delicious and I bet with you try this recipe you will not be disappointed. Ingredients:
Nellikai/Amla (Indian Gooseberry) - 6- 8 nos. (Big size)
Red Chillies - 1 cup ( You can also use Green chillies instead of Red chillies)
Turmeric Powder - 2 tsp
Mustard - 2 tsp
Fenugreek (Methi seds) - 2 tsp
Asafetida - 1 tsp ( I am little generous with Asafetida as this gives a very good aroma)
Oil - 2 tsp Procedure:
1. Grate Nellikai, remove the seeds.
2. Dry Roast Red chillies, Mustard and Fenugreek (without oil).
3. Grind to fine powder.
4. Heat oil in the pan, Add Mustard when i starts spluttering add grated Nellikai, dry roasted powder, salt, Asafetida . Fry for just few seconds. Switch off the flame.
5. Cool and store in air tight jar.
Amla/Nellikai Thokku is ready to serve. You can serve Nellikai thokku instead of pickle. You can even serve mixing with Rice by just adding 2 drop of oil, this combination will be excellent!!! Amla Tokku is a simply superb !!!
